Late Autumn

Yellow Birch

We’ve been home from our European trip for two days now. I’m surprised by how much fall color is still in the woods. Especially in the afternoons, with the dark coming early, the tops of trees are on fire while everything else is cool and enshadowed. Trees deep in the woods that I never consider, suddenly command all of my attention.

Unnoticed all year

the old birch today performs

miracles of light

Note. There is quite a leap in time between this post and the preceding one from April.  I spent much of the summer and early fall away from Maine (mostly in Chicago, but also in southern England and northern France).  I had a great time, but missed experiencing the living world of central Maine.  Next year I promise to chronicle some of the events of the summer, and early fall here.
