Spring Peepers

May 5, 2016

We’ve had a spate of rainy weather this week.  While the human population is pretty vocal about wanting some sunshine and warmth, the spring peepers are taking advantage of the wet to do what peepers are famous for—calling out in chorus for a mate.  As the rain fell last night, I expected that the spring chorus of male peepers would be loud in the marsh at the end of the lake near where we live. Braving the cars zipping along the road, I stopped to savor this annual rite of returning life and regeneration.

Marsh full of peepers—
I start home through the wet night,
then want to go back

I too want to be
nocturnal, amphibious—
chorus of peepers
